If you've grown up in the Philippines, you already know Tongits. It's the card game that comes out at every birthday party, barangay gathering, fiesta, and lazy Sunday afternoon. Three players, a standard deck, and enough strategy to keep you thinking for hours. No wonder it's one of the most popular card games in the country.
Tongits is essentially a draw-and-discard game where the goal is to get rid of all your cards by forming sets (three or more cards of the same rank) and sequences (consecutive cards of the same suit). The player who goes out first — or has the lowest point total when the deck runs out — wins the round.
What makes Tongits so special is the balance between luck and skill. You can't control which cards you draw, but how you manage your hand, read your opponents, and decide when to call "Tong-its" or dump cards — that's all on you. It rewards sharp thinking and pattern recognition, and the rounds are short enough that momentum can shift fast.
At PHDola, we've digitized the whole Tongits experience without losing what makes it fun. The interface is clean and responsive on mobile, the dealing is fair and certified, and the tables run around the clock so you can get a game going any time of day or night. Whether you're a casual player looking for entertainment or a serious Tongits kabayan gunning for the top prize, PHDola has a table for you.
New to Tongits? Here's a quick breakdown of how the game works so you can jump straight in at PHDola.
Tongits is played by three players using a standard 52-card deck. The dealer deals 12 cards to each player and keeps one extra card to start the discard pile. Everyone else gets 12 cards to start their hand.
On your turn, you draw a card either from the top of the deck or from the discard pile. You then discard one card to the pile. The goal is to form melds — sets or sequences — and reduce the point value of unmelded cards in your hand.
A meld is three or more cards of the same rank (a set) or three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (a sequence). You can lay melds face-up on the table during your turn. You can also add cards to existing melds — your own or others'.
You win the round by going "Tong-its" — discarding your last card with no remaining hand cards. Or when the deck runs out, each player totals their remaining hand card values. Lowest total wins. Face cards = 10 points each; Aces = 1 point.
If you think your hand total is the lowest, you can call a "fight" or challenge. All players reveal hands and the one with the lowest count wins. If your challenge fails, you pay a penalty. This adds a layer of bluffing and reading opponents.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest value card |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | 2 pts, 3 pts… 9 pts |
| 10, J, Q, K | 10 points each | High-value deadwood |
| Meld Type | Example | Minimum Cards |
|---|---|---|
| Set (Trio / Quad) | 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ | 3 cards (same rank) |
| Sequence (Run) | 4♥ 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ | 3 cards (same suit) |
| Extension | Add to existing meld | 1 card (any valid fit) |
Tongits isn't just luck — experienced players consistently outperform newcomers because they think several moves ahead. Here are the strategies that separate winners from casual players on the PHDola Tongits tables.
Watch the discard pile. The discard pile tells you exactly what your opponents are holding or looking for. If you see someone consistently passing on a specific suit, they probably don't need it. If they pick up your discard immediately, they just completed a meld — adjust your strategy accordingly.
Prioritize melding early. The faster you get melds down on the table, the lower your hand point total stays. Even if you can't go Tong-its, having most of your cards melded means you're in a strong position if a fight is called. Never hoard cards hoping for the perfect hand — partial melds early are almost always better than a big hand that never comes together.
Control the fight timing. Calling a fight when you're confident your hand total is the lowest is a powerful move. But if you misread the table, you pay a penalty. The best time to call is when you've melded most of your hand and an opponent just drew without melding — they're likely holding high-value deadwood.
Manage your discard tells. Online Tongits at PHDola shows which cards go to the pile. Be strategic about what you discard. Sometimes it's worth holding a card you don't need just to avoid giving an opponent a meld they're clearly chasing.
Every unmelded card is a liability. Get cards on the table early to reduce your deadwood count before a fight is called.
Track what's been discarded to figure out which cards are still live and what your opponents might need.
If you're sitting on a hand total under 10, consider calling a fight — but only if you're confident about your opponents' positions.
J-Q-K sequences are hard to complete and hold high deadwood value if the deck runs out. Cut your losses and dump face cards early.
Adding to an opponent's meld to dump a card isn't always a bad move — it's better than holding deadwood at showdown.
