Ask any Filipino and they'll tell you — Pusoy is a staple. You've probably seen it at every family reunion, every barkada hangout, and at the sari-sari store down the street. It's the kind of game where you sit down for one round and somehow end up playing until midnight.
Pusoy (sometimes called Filipino Poker or Pusoy Dos depending on the variant) is a card game played with a standard 52-card deck. In the most popular version — Big Two or Pusoy Dos — players race to shed all their cards by playing valid combinations, from single cards up to five-card poker hands. The 2 of Spades is the highest single card, and the goal is simple: get rid of your hand before everyone else does.
In the traditional Pusoy (Chinese Poker) format, each player receives 13 cards and arranges them into three separate hands: a front hand of 3 cards, a middle hand of 5 cards, and a back hand of 5 cards, each stronger than the one before. Scoring is based on how your hands rank against your opponents', making arrangement and planning absolutely critical.
At PHDola, we offer both formats so you can play the style you know best. Whether you grew up playing Big Two at the tambayan or prefer the strategic arrangement of Chinese Poker, PHDola has a table for you with real money stakes and instant PHP payouts.
Pusoy Dos (Big Two) is the fast-paced version most Pinoys know. Here's a full breakdown so you're ready to play at PHDola right away.
Four players each receive 13 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The player holding the 3 of Diamonds goes first. No ante required — gameplay begins immediately.
In Pusoy Dos, suits break ties. From lowest to highest: Diamonds → Clubs → Hearts → Spades. Ranks go from 3 (lowest) up to 2 (highest). The 2 of Spades is the most powerful single card in the game.
You can play a single card, a pair, three of a kind, or a five-card poker hand. Each play must beat the combination currently on the table — same type, higher rank. You can also pass if you don't want to play.
Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a Kind, Straight Flush, Royal Flush. A higher-tier hand always beats a lower one regardless of card values. Knowing these rankings is essential for PHDola Pusoy play.
First player to shed all 13 cards wins the round. Remaining players count their unplayed cards — each card left in hand costs points (or PHP peso penalties in cash games). Last player with cards pays the most.
| Rank | Order | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Lowest | Game starts with 3♦ holder |
| 4 – J | Ascending | Standard order |
| Q, K, A | High | Strong singles |
| 2 | Highest Single | Only 5-card hands beat it |
A pair of 2♠+2♥ beats a pair of A♠+A♦ because 2 outranks A. But within pairs of equal rank, the higher suit wins — 2♠ beats 2♥. Keep this in mind at the PHDola tables; new players often get surprised by suit rulings.
Only five-card combinations can beat a lone 2 in Pusoy Dos. Know these hands cold before you sit down at a PHDola cash table.
Five cards in sequence, mixed suits. e.g. 5-6-7-8-9
Any five cards of the same suit, non-sequential.
Three of a kind plus a pair in the same hand.
Four matching ranks plus any fifth card as kicker.
Five consecutive cards all of the same suit.
10-J-Q-K-A all in the same suit. Highest hand in the game.
In Pusoy Dos, a Four of a Kind always beats a Full House even if the Full House has higher cards. A Royal Flush beats everything. But remember — five-card hands can only beat other five-card hands of a lower tier, not singles or pairs. Don't try to play a Flush over someone's pair; that's an illegal play and will cost you your turn.
Traditional Pusoy — the Chinese Poker format — is a completely different challenge from Pusoy Dos. Each player receives 13 cards and must arrange them into three hands in a set amount of time. The front (3 cards) must be weakest, the middle (5 cards) must be stronger than the front, and the back (5 cards) must be the strongest of all.
Once all players lock in their arrangements, hands are revealed and compared. You score points (or PHP pesos at PHDola cash tables) for each hand you win against each opponent. Win all three hands against one opponent and you get a bonus "scoop" multiplier.
Pusoy (Chinese Poker) is slower-paced and deeply strategic — it's all about hand optimization under pressure. Getting your arrangement wrong and setting a "dead hand" (where a stronger hand is placed in front of a weaker one) means you automatically lose the round and pay full penalties.
| Feature | Pusoy Dos (Big Two) | Pusoy / Chinese Poker |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2–4 | 2–4 |
| Cards Dealt | 13 each | 13 each |
| Gameplay Style | Shedding race | Hand arrangement |
| Speed | Fast rounds | Slower, more strategic |
| Key Skill | Timing, sequencing | Hand optimization |
Whether you're playing Pusoy Dos or traditional Pusoy, these strategies will sharpen your game and help you cash out more consistently.
In Pusoy Dos, the 2s are game-changers. If you know that two or three 2s have already been played or are sitting in weak positions with other players, you can play more aggressively without fear of being blocked.
Don't hold pairs just for the sake of it. If a pair is blocking your ability to run out your hand, it might be better to play the individual cards to clear your hand faster. Flexibility beats rigidity every time.
A 2 is your nuclear option in Pusoy Dos. Don't burn it just to win a minor skirmish early. Save your 2s for when you're close to going out or when an opponent is about to win and you need to break their momentum.
If your 13-card deal includes the makings of a Straight or better, prioritize completing that five-card hand. It gives you massive flexibility — a Straight Flush can wipe any single card or pair off the table and force opponents to pass.
Your front (3-card) hand is scored just like the others. Don't give up on it — even a single pair in the front can win you a unit against each opponent. But never put a stronger hand in front; that's a dead hand and costs you everything.
In Chinese Pusoy, winning all three hands against one opponent gives you a scoop bonus — usually worth 3x the standard unit. When you have a strong overall deal, prioritize the scoop rather than playing safe on one hand.
When someone passes in Pusoy Dos, they're telling you something about their hand. Frequent early passes often mean they're sitting on a strong hand waiting for the right moment. Don't go out on a limb when the table suddenly goes quiet.
